Two Critical Competencies

It comes as no surprise that in these times of rapidly changing work dynamics, the skills that drive success are also evolving. Two critical competencies that are increasingly mentioned by business thought leaders are Emotional Intelligence and Adaptability. What gets less coverage is the connection between these two fundamental attributes.

EQ

The Emotional Intelligence Quotient is a measure of one’s ability to understand and manage one’s own emotions, as well as the capacity to recognize and influence the feelings of others. One who has self-awareness and command over their own emotional responses has a powerful foundation for strong interpersonal relationships and effective communication. When we possess high EQ, we are able to be more empathetic, are less easily upset, and are better equipped to gracefully navigate the complexities of any social environment, whether that be in a business or personal context.

AQ

The Adaptability Quotient, on the other hand, is a means of measuring one’s capacity to adjust and thrive in changing circumstances. It examines factors like grit, resilience, flexibility, and the willingness to embrace new challenges without losing perspective. In a world where change sometimes feels like the only constant, one’s AQ determines how well we can pivot, innovate, and grow, while not losing sight of long-term goals.

Some Ways EQ and AQ Intersect:

Self-Awareness and Resilience

High EQ individuals are keenly aware of their emotional strengths and weaknesses. This self-awareness improves resilience, a core component of AQ, by enabling them to quickly recognize when a setback or change of circumstances generates emotional obstacles such as fear, stress, or frustration. By recognizing their own response patterns, they are able to step back, adjust their approach, and reengage these situations with confidence.

Empathy and Collaboration

Strengthening one’s EQ improves one’s ability to empathize with others, an essential factor in fostering better collaboration and teamwork. In times of change, old methods and approaches may no longer be effective, or can even become detrimental, yet it is exactly at these times that the stakes can feel extremely high. When leaders and teammates have developed their respective EQ, they are able to give each other the support and trust necessary to maintain positive morale and the room to make and recover from the mistakes and stumbles that are inevitable in such circumstances. This deepens the interpersonal and organizational sense of safety, which is a vital component in creating a workplace that enables rather than inhibits adaptability.

Emotional Regulation and Stress Management

Managing emotions is crucial during transitions. High EQ individuals can regulate their emotions, not only reducing their own stress in uncertain times, but allowing them to recognize when their emotional state is raising the stress levels of the people who work with or under them. Similar to the impact of empathy, this emotional regulation is a powerful contributor to creating an environment that nurtures adaptability.

Motivation and Growth Mindset

Individuals with high AQ are often highly motivated and possess a growth mindset. They have learned that challenges are often opportunities rather than obstacles. Emotional stresses, however, can cloud this perspective. Developing one’s EQ can help one to assess situations more logically, and dampen the impact of negative emotions on overall adaptability.
